This is an incredible book for a first timer. It gives a very good introduction to the Python language and how to apply aspects of it to solving Physics problems.There are a few minor issues with the book (Not worth rating it lower than 5 stars). Dr. Newman will introduce libraries and not explain some of them, such as gaussxw. These are usually libraries and functions on the book website. However, there is no reference to it in the book when introduced. Minor oversite. Another issue is that there are parts of the book where it appears he didn't pay attention to which values he was using.These are types of issues that I am sure will be fixed in later editions. Overall this is an incredible book. I picked up this book to see what it had to say. It has taught me things that I did not know. I love that!

I am a mathematician with some basic programing experience and I was interested in learning Python mostly for mathematical and educational purposes. I consulted many Python books, but I find myself returning over and over again to Chapters 2 and 3 of this book. If you are new to Python and you are interested in scientific applications this is in my view the best place to start.

An excellent book for introductory programming for physics students, yet a great addition to any physicist's personal library. It does a really great job at presenting physics and the code involved - possibly the most well presented in terms of code. I've read countless books where the code looks disorganised and, in some cases, riddled with errors/bugs. The book also encourages the reader to try examples throughout each chapter instead of lumping together a whole pile of chapter problems at the end of the chapter - I cannot stress how convenient this style is,in that it prompts the reader to try push for a solution before reading on, and saves one from having to thumb back through the chapter for relevant equations.My only qualms about this book are that, while the concepts and problems are themselves challenging to the physics enthusiast, there is not enough material on stochastic methods, particularly with Markov Chain Monte Carlo, which is has fast become a staple technique in statistical analysis or modelling for any budding physics researcher; the idea of object oriented programming (python being itself object oriented) is completely cast aside which, I am told, is somewhat of a crime in the eyes of the python aficionado; and there seems to be no e-book version provided with the purchase - something that I would much rather prefer as it encourages one to code while reading it.That being said, the book presents exactly what it promises: computational methods and concepts in physics, does so very neatly without insulting the reader's intelligence. I highly recommend this book to those only beginning python/programming and are enthusiastic about physics. It is a much more fun and challenging introduction to the language than the official Python tutorials and other textbooks that may focus on presenting you with rigorous overview of the Python language that can become boring and cumbersome.

I like this book, but the physics is largely in the problems and not so much the text. The text is mostly organized by the features of the Python programming language (first four chapters) and then the pure mathematical concepts that are clearly programmable (chapters 5-10) rather than on the topics in physics to which they apply. There are some neat concepts in physics I did not know before reading the book (like the Madelung constant) but I am glad this professor from U. I am only about halfway through this book but feel that it has really helped me learn both Python programming and solid numerical analysis skills. My only warning is that without a strong physics background the examples and problems may be a bit opaque, but with a strong physics background this book does an excellent job of connecting the physics with computational techniques.

As Eric Ayars said, there are a lot of good books about Python, a bunch of good books about computational physics but we gota lack of book about comp. phys. using Python 3. That's the one and it's a real good one. I got only a suggestion: more practical exercises but, you know, if you buy this book you've advanced in this subject a lot of the road probably...

Great text that covers essential concepts such as derivatives, integrals, ODES, PDE's. What I enjoy about this text is that it focuses on generalities and therefore has been of great use to me in writing algorithms for my own research. Would highly recommend to those folks who want to explore computational/physical/mathematical research/projects.

I absolutely love the physics in this book and it does a great job presenting a lot of the python concepts you will need to do amazing things. My only gripe is that it completely blows off object oriented principles and their benefits which is a crime. You will want to learn more about OO for larger scale and maintainable applications as you do more. Aside from that it is very well written and a pleasure to read and work with.

During 15 years of experience in engineering for waterworks and computational fluid dynamics, he has focused on the Lagrangian modelling of turbulent flows through the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics numerical method, SPH. He has also been acting as an organiser of the SPH international community through the working group SPHERIC (SPH European Research Interest Group).

About the Author

Prasanta Kumar Basu retired as a professor from the University of Calcutta in 2011 and is now a UGC Basic Scientific Research Faculty Fellow at the university. Dr. Basu has published roughly 120 articles in peer-reviewed journals. His research interests include low-field and hot electron transport and scattering mechanisms in semiconductors and their nanostructures, semiconductor electronic and photonic devices, and optical communication. He earned a PhD in radio physics and electronics from the University of Calcutta.

Bratati Mukhopadhyay is an assistant professor in the Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics at the University of Calcutta. Dr. Mukhopadhyay is a member of the IEEE and the current secretary of the IEEE Photonics Society, Calcutta Chapter. Her research interests include physics of semiconductor nanostructures, semiconductor devices and modeling, VLSI circuits, and photonics. She earned a PhD in radio physics and electronics from the University of Calcutta.

Rikmantra Basu is an assistant professor in the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Delhi. Dr. Basu is a member of the IEEE. His research interests include semiconductor devices, electronic circuits and devices, optoelectronics and optical communication, and nanophotonics. He earned a Ph.D. in nanotechnology from the University of Calcutta.

Since Jake is a dog without a driver's license (his furry feet don't reach the pedals), he relies on Maria, former longtime USA Today correspondent, to be his chauffeur. Maria is well qualified. She started chauffeuring dogs in 1989, when her intrepid Airedale, Joe, joined her during some of her travels for the newspaper. Joe and Maria sniffed out enough dog-friendly places that they came out with their first book, The Dog Lover's Companion to the Bay Area, shortly thereafter. The Dog Lover's Companion to California was born next. (Each book is now in its fifth edition!) After 13 years of traveling with Maria, Joe recently left for Dog Heaven, where all the cats are slow and no one tells you not to eat horse manure. THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE KINDLE VERSIONI bought the e-version for a trip to San Diego on Thanksgiving 2012. Turns out the latest physical book edition is 2011, but the only Kindle version is 2008. I looked up 6 restaurants in the SD area, 4 had gone out of business, 1 had moved locations 2 years ago, and the sixth had removed their dog-friendly patio seating last year.In addition to out-dated information, this is not an e-book; it is a bunch of text and some images dumped into a file. Table of Contents items are links to chapters, and some businesses have websites that are web links, but there are no links for map references, or for mentions in a review of another nearby businesses or park location. For example, the beginning of each chapter has "Pick of the Litter", a list of the best of each sub-section. It will say something like "MOST DOG-FRIENDLY PLACES TO EAT", BOB'S DINER, (page 100). Well, thanks for giving me a page number for a thing that has no page numbers.The two stars I've awarded this title are based on the previous 2 editions I've owned (paper books, not kindle books): past books have been pretty helpful and on a few occasions it's really saved me a lot of time. I'd recommend the current, physical edition of this book, but I absolutely would not recommend the Kindle version right now. If the publisher does eventually update the Kindle version, I'd recommend that you wait until there are reviews so you can figure out if they've actually spent some resources on designing a usable e-book.

We were new to the Bay Area when we purchased this book and it has become our go-to weekend guide! We simply decide where we want to go and then read through the descriptions to see what suits our mood. On really hot days, we'll look for a place that is nestled in a eucalyptus grove or on the beach. We can also pick out where we want to eat before or after our adventure. I haven't been blown away by the restaurant recommendations, but the park descriptions have been great.We have two smaller dogs and the author is reviewing from a big dog owner's perspective. Again, we just look at the initial summation (how highly rated it is, if it's off-leash or not) and then we look through to see what our dogs will appreciate most. They aren't too interested in getting wet or muddy, but they do love exploring new landscapes with few people around.All in all, this book is absolutely wonderful and we've gotten a lot of use out of it. I only wish they had one for every area!

Great reference book for a road trip Monterey to San Simeon to Santa Barbara to Paso Robles. Good for dog friendly beaches and places to walk. I give it four stars only because it is a bit dated for lodging and restaurant listings.

We have only had our dog 5 months, now, and I can't say that I have tried alot of the places reviewed in this book.I can say that I am overwhelmingly grateful that someone took the time to compile this information. I used to poke fun at my friends who couldn't bare to leave their dog at home, and now I find myself feeling the same way! The prospects of what this book has to offer is delightful.The book is broken down into counties. You will find listings for parks, recreation, places to stay, restaurants, and diversions. Depending on what the county has to offer, those that are profiled are rated. The book is fun to use and humorous. It is reassuring to see so many places that are dog friendly, and I anticipate patronizing quite a few of the listings.

I've only had the chance to try a few of the places mentioned in the book but so far it's been good. I am really looking forward to trying out some of the northern California locations next year. Overall I would say this is a great resource for someone with fur children.

Gave this as a gift to my daughter and her family who have adopted a lovely Golden Retriever from rescue. They were thrilled as they love to camp and explore with their family.This book has lots of information which will help them plan their family outings and camping or overnight travel, since now they will be traveling with Charly, the Golden Retriever!As I dog lover myself, I know that you must plan ahead to travel with a pet...and even to hike with a dog, or go to the beach. Their are many pet friendly places and this bookis a great resource.

This is a great book if you are traveling in California with a dog. Has a lot of the dog parks listed. I appreciate the fact that each town that has something in it has a listings and there is a rating system through out the book so I can tell at a glance what we can do and what the author thought of it. There is also great advice on fun places to go with dogs. My Husband and I grab it and our dog on the weekend and go out and adventure with it. Highly recommend it.

My book arrived quicker than expected, thank you seller. My only issue is that it's pretty short on So. Cal stuff to do. About 3/4 of the book is all North of Santa Barbara and the rest is south of there. I LOVE northern California and visit the Sierras as often as I can, just wish there was more about So Cal. It's a nice book tho, easy to read and find info.
