This dictionary contains 2,375 Russian sayings and proverbs and their English counterparts. Variants of each saying are included, and careful attention is given to the differences in British and American versions. For example, the Russian saying that is interpreted as "Children behave in a childish way, and they cannot be expected to act like grown-up people," is first given in Russian (in the Cyrillic alphabet) and then in English, and is then followed by the nearest English-language equivalent sayings in Britain and the United States: "Young colts will canter" (British) and "Boys will be boys" (American). The proverbs and sayings are arranged alphabetically by the first Russian word (in the Cyrillic alphabet) and are cross-referenced so the reader can find analogous Russian versions of English sayings. There is a keyword index for each language (one in English, one in Russian in the Cyrillic alphabet), which allows the reader to find a proverb or a saying without knowing the first word. Proverbs and sayings are current and include those popular in both spoken Russian and literature. The prefatory matter is in both English and Russian, for readers who have a command of either language.

Compared with S.A. Krylov's comprehensive Russian-English Dictionary of Russian Sayings and Proverbs (1973), which has 35,000 entries, this dictionary lists a little under 2500 proverbs and proverbial sayings. Since many proverbs are variations of one another (and are here connected by See references), this is probably a sufficient number. Peter Mertvago's The Comparative Russian-English Dictionary of Russian Proverbs and Sayings (Hippocrene, 1995) lists approximately 5500 proverbs, for instance, while S.S. Kuz'min and N.L. Shadrin's Russko-angliiskii slovar' poslovits i pogovorok (MIK: Lan', 1996) considers 500 sufficient. Margulis (a doctoral student) and Kholodnaya (retired, Chernovtsy State Univ., Ukraine) list proverbs alphabetically by Russian; each entry gives the proverb in Russian often followed by an explanatory sentence. These explanations are rarely direct translations but more often a somewhat clumsy and verbose rephrasing which in general is superfluous since it is followed by one or more equivalent proverbs in both American and British English, which sufficiently explain the Russian proverb. (There is no transliteration.) A literal translation of entry 2,162 for example, would be: "With a good husband, the wife is good, too." The explanation states: "A good and honest man has a wholesome influence on his wife," which is not better than the following British and American proverb: "A good husband makes a good wife." Russian and English key word indexes round out the text and should have been supplemented by a subject index. For example, entries 11; 12; 1,519; and 1,948 deal with leadership and team spirit but are not covered by the keyword entry "Team." The dictionary would be especially useful for translators of Russian literature, which is why the absence of misogynist proverbs such as "U baby volos dolog, da um korotok" ("Women have long hair but a short mind") though understandable, is not helpful. Recommended for larger academic and larger public libraries.
